Accra Hearts of Oak make a huge statement on opening weekend of 2026-27 Ghana Premier League season

Accra Hearts of Oak put up a statement marker on the opening weekend of the 2026-27 Ghana Premier League (GPL) with an emphatic win on Sunday.

The Phobians were out of soughts as they beat Berekum Chelsea 4-0 at the University of Ghana Stadium, Legon in their opening game of the season.

Goals by John Antwi, two, Abdul Kader Kourama and Ali Mohammed, handed the capital club all three points as they laid down their credentials for the season.

They sit top of the stairs after the opening weekend of the new campaign as they seek a first GPL title in five years.

Elsewhere on the opening weekend of the campaign, record winners Asante Kotoko were held to a pulsating 2-2 draw away to newly promoted Debibi United at Berekum.

Sunday's other matches in the GPL, saw FC Samartex 1996 beating Karela United 3-1 at Samreboi to keep their good form at home going since joining the Ghanaian top-flight league.

Bechem United beat Bibiani GoldStars 1-0 at the Nana Fosu Gyeabour Park, Bechem to open the campaign on a high.

Two newly promoted sides Port City FC and FC AshantiGold 04 drew 1-1 at the Nana Boamah Darko II Park, Kukurantumi.

Basake Holy Stars beat Swedru All Blacks 1-0 at the AAK II Sports Complex, Azulewanu to open their account with a win.

A very closely fought affair was played at the Kpando Sports Stadium as Aduana FC forced a goalless drawn game away to Heart of Lions..

In the seven matches played on Sunday in the GPL, 16 goals were scored with four home wins and three drawn games.
