Breaking news: Carlos Queiroz leaves role as Ghana head coach after poor start to 2027 PAMOJA AFCON qualifiers

Carlos Queiroz has left his position as head coach of Ghana after reaching an agreement with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to terminate his contract.

The Portuguese coach said the decision followed discussions with the GFA conducted in a spirit of mutual respect, with both parties concluding that ending their working relationship was the most appropriate course of action under the circumstances.

Queiroz, who was appointed to lead the Black Stars ahead of the 2026 World Cup, said he was proud of his time in charge and grateful for the opportunity to work with the national team.

His departure comes after a difficult start to Ghana’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.

The Black Stars suffered defeats against Côte d’Ivoire and The Gambia, results that increased pressure on the team and contributed to the decision to end Queiroz’s tenure.

The Portuguese manager said his objective had been to help build a stronger future for the Black Stars while contributing to the development of Ghanaian talent.

However, he acknowledged that the conditions needed to fully implement that vision had not been established and that the team’s recent performances played a part in the decision.

Queiroz also thanked his technical staff and the players for their efforts, particularly during preparations for the 2026 World Cup.

He urged supporters to continue backing the Black Stars, stressing that the squad possesses talent and potential and can achieve significant things with unity, support and the right environment.

The former Portugal and Real Madrid coach also expressed his appreciation to the GFA, its president and the Ghanaian public for the trust and support shown during his time in charge.

His departure leaves Ghana searching for a new head coach at a crucial point in preparations for the 2026 World Cup and the ongoing 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.

Queiroz ended his farewell message by placing Ghana, the Black Stars and Ghanaian football at the centre of his departure, before thanking the country and looking ahead to the future.
